Carbodote® Range

Activated Charcoal for Toxicology Treatment.

Product Overview

The Carbodote® Range provides palatable, ready-to-use activated charcoal formulations designed to assist veterinary management following poison ingestion.

Available in pre-filled syringes and liquid suspension, Carbodote® is an adsorbent formulation which helps bind toxins within the gastrointestinal tract while offering practical administration in emergency and after-hours settings.

With step-based options for initial and repeat dosing, the Carbodote® Range supports structured toxicology protocols in small animal practice.

Key Benefits

  • Palatable, sweet-tasting activated charcoal
  • Ready-to-use gels and liquid homogeneous formulations where no mixing is required, giving confidence in administering the correct amount of activated charcoal.
  • Designed for rapid response in intoxication cases
  • Broad adsorption capacity
  • Practical formats to reduce time, mess, and stress

Directions for use

Carbodote® Prime (Step 1)
78 g dial-and-dispense syringe

  • Initial activated charcoal administration
  • Contains sodium sulphate* to assist intestinal transit and toxin elimination
  • Intended for use in-clinic
  • Administer once only in consultation

* Not suitable for small exotic animals.

Carbodote® Repeat (Step 2)
72 g syringe

  • Plain charcoal gel (no cathartic)
  • Suitable for repeat dosing in cases of enterohepatic recirculation
  • Typically administered every 4–6 hours for 24–48 hours*
  • May be continued at home under veterinary direction

*Frequency may vary depending on the ingested substance.

When the use of sodium sulphate is inappropriate, Carbodote Repeat may be used instead of Prime.

Carbodote® Liquid
100 mL suspension

  • Activated charcoal without cathartic
  • Suitable where a liquid format is preferable i.e. nasogastric tube
  • Recommended dosing: 5 mL/kg
  • May be used as a substitute for Prime or Repeat as clinically indicated**

**Follow veterinary instructions as necessary.

Shake well before use.

Clinical Considerations

Activated charcoal works by adsorbing a wide range of substances within the gastrointestinal tract, helping limit systemic absorption.

Carbodote® Prime supports rapid initial intervention with cathartic-assisted transit.
Carbodote® Repeat allows continued charcoal coverage without additional cathartic exposure.
Carbodote® Liquid provides flexible administration in species or cases where gel format is less suitable.

Clinical decision-making should consider:

  • Type of toxin
  • Time since ingestion
  • Species
  • Risk of enterohepatic recirculation
  • Suitability of cathartic use
